When others were right
The artists personal title for this piece is ‘Aunty Beryl’. This is a significant piece for the artist, being the first work she ever formally titled, after having dinner with her Aunt where they disagreed over the titleing of artwork. Emma believed all her abstract works should remain ‘Untitled’ to leave room for the viewer to decide for themselves the subject matter and interpret the feel of the work unassisted. Beryl believed abstract works should always have a title to assist the viewer and to give them an idea, and that this would lead to better connection to the subject and increase sales. When starting a new painting in her studio the next morning, Emma was going over the conversation in her head, she still believed her Aunt was wrong and was wanting her to romantisise works by adding eronious or florid titles. However when she completed the painting she called it ‘Aunty Beryl’ in homage to her Aunt and has formally titled it ‘When others are right’. Emma has titled the magority of her work ever since. This work is the first works from the ‘Frustration Series’.
